I don’t know how many times I have read Waylander.  It seems to me to be quintessential Gemmell: lots of baddies, a handful of goodies.  But of course many of the baddies aren’t all that bad and in fact redeem themselves by carrying out impossibly heroic feats for the greater good of mankind.  And many of the goodies aren’t really very good, either because they are expert at killing other people or because they’re only doing the right thing because it suits their personal purposes, or both.
   It’s a great book.  Everyone disagrees with everyone else.  Nobody turns out to be quite what or who you expected.  About the only things you can predict when you pick up Waylander (and indeed any Gemmell book) are that you are in for a good, enjoyable read, and the forces of good will triumph over the forces of evil – eventually.
